The theme for GTA’s 2014 Annual Meeting is “Connecting Communities.” The program this year will highlight several areas designed to assist companies in positioning themselves and their communities to succeed.
Leading off the program will be Mike Balhoff, Partner, Charlesmead Advisors, LLC. Prior to his current position Mike headed the Telecommunications Equity Research Group at Legg Mason. Mike has spent many years working closely with the ILEC industry and has been named a Wall Street Journal All-Star Analyst for his recommendations in the telecommunications industry. Mike is a frequent speaker to telecommunications industry groups. Mike will challenge attendees with his assessment of the industry and his thoughts on how GTA’s members can enhance their strategic value and be successful.
Mike will be followed by Kathy Wallman and Harold Furchgott-Roth who have worked collaboratively to develop a framework for assessing the FCC’s 2011 Universal Service and Intercarrier Compensation Order. Kathy currently serves on the Board of Public Knowledge, leads Wallman Consulting and is involved in a variety of other related activities. In prior years she served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and at the FCC she served as Chief, Common Carrier Bureau and Deputy Chief, Cable Services Bureau. Harold is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and is founder and director of the Center for the Economics of the Internet. From 1997 through 2001, Harold served as a commissioner of the FCC. Prior to that Harold was Chief Economist for the House Committee on Commerce and a principal staff member on the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Kathy and Harold will provide attendees with their insights and assessment of the FCC’s 2011 Order and subsequent initiatives. It will be especially interesting and informative for attendees to hear their thoughts on the FCC’s initiatives under its new leadership and with four of the five commissioners being new since the 2011 Order was issued.
Following Kathy and Harold’s remarks, Steve Kraskin will moderate a discussion with Mike, Kathy and Harold. Attendees will be encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to question this very knowledgeable and experienced panel.
On Tuesday, there will be two concurrent roundtable discussions. The first roundtable discussion titled “Digital Learning In Georgia” will focus on the impact of the recommendations of the Governor’s Digital Learning Task Force and education initiatives included in the budget adopted by the General Assembly this year. Attendees will learn more about K12 school network upgrades, improved E-Rate leveraging and other initiatives related to enhancing Digital Learning in Georgia, and the role of the telecommunications industry. Bill Price, Digital Georgia Programs Director, Georgia Technology Authority will moderate the roundtable discussion.
The second roundtable discussion titled “Collaborative Opportunities” will focus on collaborative activities involving GTA’s members and activities in other states. Steve Kraskin will moderate this roundtable discussion.
